A massive fire broke out at a pharmaceutical factory in Kolkata.
On August 2, 2025, a massive fire broke out at the Dej Medical factory in the Bondel area of Kolkata. It is believed that the fire started due to a short circuit. According to the sources, 11 fire engines were deployed to bring the fire under control.
An explosion erupted from the factory, flames were visible, and black smoke billowed over the surrounding area. The suddenness of the incident left the people of the area shocked. The large houses in the vicinity were evacuated very quickly due to this fire. People fell sick so quickly and as a result of the explosion, and were taken to the hospital. Many people had difficulty breathing, and everyone was running around, creating a very scary situation.
It is said that more than 300 employees worked in the factory, and some firefighters also felt sick after the fire broke out. It was a difficult task to bring the fire under control, as the fire was coming out through the doors and windows.
It is also being heard that the short circuit occurred from the welding machine, because there was a welding machine inside the factory. The news of the fire reached the Gariahat police station at around 4 pm. Immediately, 4 to 5 fire engines were sent to the spot. But as the fire gained full momentum, several more fire engines were sent later to the spot.
The factory was reportedly undergoing renovations, and there were few employees as the factory was closed on Saturday, so there were no reports of casualties. A crowd of enthusiastic people gathered to watch the fire. Despite the firefighting system in the factory, it was of no use.
Firefighters began breaking the factory’s doors and windows to put out the fire. Officials from the Lalbazar Disaster Response Force arrived at the scene. The fire was being put out in a hurry in the old-fashioned factory. The fire brigade used water from nearby ponds to put out the fire.
Then, explosion after explosion followed, and two firefighters also became sick and were rushed out. The factory had a large stock of various pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, such as liquids, capsules, tablets, and various types of chemicals.
A major accident was avoided because each drug section was separate, and Saturday was a holiday. Forensic examination will reveal the real cause of the fire.
To avoid such large-scale fires in the future, we must be more careful than before, adopt modern fire extinguishing systems, and construct buildings in a modern way with future-proof firefighting technology. Be it is a pharmaceutical factory or a chemical factory, these chemicals must be properly maintained so that even if a fire breaks out, it cannot spread easily and the surrounding areas remain safe. This will reduce the amount of damage and loss in the future.
Appropriate measures should be taken to prevent firefighters from getting sick and spreading toxic fumes, such as firefighters using masks, gloves, etc. It can also be said that electrical wires that have the potential to cause short circuits should be replaced immediately.
